Lazio defender Francesco Acerbi has once again become the favourite to be Inter’s last defensive signing of the transfer window ahead of Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji.

This according to Italian news outlet Repubblica.it, who report that the 34-year-old looks to be in favour once again after it had seemed as though the Nerazzurri were becoming more inclined towards a move for Akanji as Lazio could open up to a loan deal.

Inter’s plan has always been to sign one more defender before the summer transfer window slams shut, although the identity of this defender has never been clear and they have been looking at both Acerbi and Akanji among their main options.

Earlier today, it had seemed as though Akanji had started to emerge as the favourite as things looked as though a deal could be made for the Swiss international which would be financially feasible for the Nerazzurri.

However, at the same time the contacts have been ongoing with Acerbi’s representatives as well as with Lazio President Claudio Lotito.

Given that Lotito wants to offload the out-of-favour Acerbi before the transfer window closes, he would be ready to consider a loan deal, although he would hope for it to contain a purchase obligation whereas Inter CEO Beppe Marotta would be hoping for just a purchase option.
