A centenary classic, derby wins and a rise to the summit headline this Lazio week, which also remembers Enrique Flamini.
According to The Laziali, 9 January 2000 brought Lazio 3-1 Bologna on the club’s 100th anniversary, an Olimpico sell-out and a debut for the centenary kit.
Bologna began brighter, Beppe Signori hit the bar and coach Francesco Guidolin was dismissed on 22 minutes. Pavel Nedved went close, Gianluca Pagliuca saved a Sinisa Mihajlovic free-kick, then Mihajlovic missed a 27th-minute penalty. On 42, Nedved struck the bar and Marcelo Salas headed in.
After the break Signori crossed for Kennet Andersson to equalise. Lazio surged, Salas went off injured and Roberto Mancini spurned a one-on-one, before Sergio Conceição found Nedved, whose header made it 2-1 with 15 to play. Nedved was then sent off, Michele Paramatti saw red on 90, and in 94 Fabrizio Ravanelli sealed it, 3-1 and top spot.
Elsewhere, 6 January delivered two derby victories, 3-1 over Roma in 2005 with Paolo Di Canio scoring, and 4-1 in the 1998 Coppa Italia thanks to Boksic, Jugovic, Mancini and Fuser. Lazio also beat Inter 3-2 on 6 January 1955, with Vivolo, Hansen and Burini on target.
There was a 3-2 win at Fiorentina on 9 January 2005 through Di Canio, Goran Pandev and Ousmane Dabo, and a 3-1 home victory over Bari on 10 January 1937, via Baldo, D’Odorico and Viani, to lead at halfway. Flamini, a stylish midfielder and coach, served Lazio for decades and died in 1982.
