Lazio star Ciro Immobile will captain Italy in their 2022 World Cup qualifier against Lithuania this evening.
According to a report from Italian radio broadcaster Radiosei (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) earlier today, the 31-year-old Italian striker will wear the captain’s armband for the Azzurri for the first time in two and a half years.
Immobile has only ever captained Italy once before, in a Nations League game against Portugal back in September 2018.
This evening’s match against Lithuania is another opportunity for the 31-year-old Immobile to establish himself in Roberto Mancini’s side, ahead of this summer’s European Championship.
In this international break, the Biancocelesti star scored in the 2-0 win against Northern Ireland and performed well as a substitute against Bulgaria.
Immobile has been in good form this season at club level, scoring 19 goals and providing five assists in 31 appearances across all competitions, but has often struggled to establish himself with the Azzurri, only netting 11 times in 44 appearances, with none of those goals being at major tournaments.
