Lazio coach Marco Baroni is set to ring the changes once more as he negotiates a series of crucial, season-defining fixtures.
The Biancocelesti have at least started the gauntlet on a high note, registering a labored victory over Atalanta away from home thanks to Gustav Isaksen’s solitary strike. Observers noted that, between compulsory and voluntary choices, Baroni had made seven changes to the lineup that started the previous contest against Torino.
According to Il Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the 61-year-old is likely to pull off similar rotations in the upcoming fixtures. On Thursday, Lazio will play Bodo/Glimt away from home in the First Leg of their Europa League Quarter-Final, before clashing heads with Roma in the Derby della Capitale on Sunday. This will be followed by the decisive second leg against the Norwegians.
The Roman newspaper envisions an almost-completely revamped lineup on Thursday, beginning with Ivan Provedel’s return to goal. Alessio Romagnoli, Adam Marusic and Elseid Hysaj should all reclaim their spots at the back, while Mario Gila is the only one who keeps his place in the defensive line.
Nicolo Rovella and Reda Belahyane impressed against Atalanta, but neither is eligible to play in midweek, as the Italian is suspended, whereas the Moroccan isn’t on the Europa League list. Therefore, Matteo Guendouzi and Matias Vecino are expected to start, while Isaksen, Pedro, and Mattia Zaccagni should support Boulaye Dia upfront.
As for the Roman Derby, Rovella will certainly return to the starting lineup, and could be accompanied by his friend Luca Pellegrini, who is only eligible to play in Serie A. Taty Castellanos could also return to the lineup if he manages to regain his best physical condition.
These heavy changes should appease Lazio President Claudio Lotito who has been preaching the need for more rotation. Il Messaggero revealed how the patron commented on Baroni’s choices against Atalanta.
Now, Baroni has understood that rotation is the secret to success. The three-year project started with Baroni and will end with him. We will renew his contract.
