Lazio have reportedly sent a representative to negotiate the potential transfer of Panathinaikos striker Fotis Ionnidis.
Despite signing several attacking additions last season (Dia, Noslin and Tchaouna), the Biancocelesti have struggled to find the back of the net when Taty Castellanos was ruled out of action. Even the Argentinian’s displays have come under scrutiny as of late, with a section of the fanbase feeling that the club requires a more prolific centre-forward to lead the charge.
Therefore, Lazio are widely expected to search the market for an out-and-out striker capable of adding strength, physicality, and, more importantly, goals. In recent weeks, the club has been linked with several potential profiles, including Ionnidis who was already on Angelo Fabiani’s shortlist last summer.
According to Sportdog.gr (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the Italian capital side has already sent an emissary to Athens to test the waters with Panathinaikos. The source describes it as an attempt to open preliminary talks with the Greek giants, in order to set the stage for more serious negotiations in the coming weeks and months.
The source recalls how Lazio refused to pay the €20 million requested by Panathinaikos last summer, but the Greek club’s asking price has now dropped to €15 million, as the player is coming off a disappointing campaign. Last term, he had scored 23 goals in 44 matches, but this season, his numbers dropped to 11 goals in 42 appearances.
The report adds that Lazio doesn’t consider either Castellanos or Dia untouchable. The Argentina international, who has suitors in the Premier League and LaLiga, could be available for €30 million, while the Senegalese could be sold for just €15 million.
Nevertheless, Lazio fans might feel underwhelmed by Ionnidis’ profile, especially based on his mediocre stats this season.
