Lazio paid tribute to legendary former midfielder Luciano Re Cecconi, who would’ve turned 74 today.

The Italian spent the final five years of his career with the Biancocelesti from 1972 to 1977, helping the side win their first ever Scudetto in the 1973-74 season. He made 139 appearances across all competitions for Lazio, scoring nine goals in that time.

Re Cecconi sadly passed away on 18th January 1977 at the age of 28, dying in unusual circumstances. The Lazio midfielder allegedly paid a practical joke on a jeweller in Rome, pretending to be a robber, and was shot once in the chest by a 7.65 calibre Walther pistol.

He died in hospital soon after. The jeweller, Bruno Tabocchini, was cleared in a trial 18 days later, being acquitted for ‘shooting in putative self-defence’.

In recent years, this version of events has been challenged and there have been some suggestions that Re Cecconi was shot without even uttering a word in the jewellery shop.

Regardless, the passing of Re Cecconi deeply affected the Lazio environment and he has never been forgotten in the Italian capital, with the club paying tribute to him every year on 1st December, his birthday.
