Once the campaign is wrapped up, the Lazio directors will sit on the table with head coach Marco Baroni in what will be a crucial meeting for the club’s future.
The 61-year-old was appointed last summer after leaving his mark at Lecce and Hellas Verona among other smaller clubs. While the fanbase questioned his ability to steer the Biancocelesti back on the right track following a turbulent campaign, Baroni managed to win over the naysayers with a spectacular first half of the season.
Nevertheless, the second part of the campaign has been less positive, to say the least, so the coach’s position is no longer as certain as it was a few months ago. For his part, Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani had reiterated the club’s trust in Baroni but refused to offer any guarantees for the future, insisting that all assessments will be made at the end of the season.
So, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the time has come for the two parties to review their collaboration and make a decision regarding next season. Since the Serie A campaign will reach the finish line this weekend, the pink newspaper expects the summit to take place next week.
Baroni’s contract is only valid until June 2026, but he’s unlikely to start the next campaign on an expiring deal. Therefore, the two parties will either agree to extend the contract or head in separate directions. Despite a few cracks in their relationship, the report expects the hierarchy to offer the manager a new deal.
Last summer, Lazio held a similar meeting with Igor Tudor, but they decided to part ways after failing to agree on a common transfer strategy. Nevertheless, the sensation is that Baroni and the management are on the same page in this regard.
