Lazio coach Marco Baroni hasn’t quite digested Torino’s late equalizer, which cost them two valuable points in the Champions League race.
The Biancocelesti hosted the Granata on Monday night, and appeared to be on their way towards a rebound win following Adam Marusic’s second-half strike. Mattia Zaccagni and company then wasted several inviting chances to put the match to bed, but couldn’t beat Vanja Milinkovic-Savic. In the end, Gvidas Gineitis came off the bench to finish off a Torino play that earned the visitors a point.
In his post-match press conference (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Baroni insisted the Lazio fans had every right to whistle and jeer, as he himself was livid by the equalizer.
The fans are right [to jeer] because it’s been a long time since we won at home, and we didn’t do everything we could to win the match. You can’t concede a goal like this, period. You can’t concede a goal from a team that hardly tried to score. I’m p****d off as hell, but I think this draw must be a springboard.
Moreover, the 61-year-old refused to use Taty Castellanos’ absence as an alibi, despite his undisputed importance for the team.
It’s useless for me to stand here and say how important Castellanos is, but not even under torture will I start crying because I’ve been missing my striker for two months. The team was capable of winning this match but you can’t throw away points like that.
Baroni replaced the influential Pedro in the second half, bringing in Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who had a disappointing outing.
Pedro asked me to change him because he had given everything. He played a crazy game. I put Dele-Bashiru on because there was space for him to exploit. It was his sort of game. The problem is that he has to do better when he enters the penalty box.
