Raucous home fans were treated to a thriller as Lazio pulled apart reigning champions Milan on Tuesday, leaving Napoli 12 points clear at the top of the table.

Stefano Pioli’s men (who sit second) needed to claim all three points, but Maurizio Sarri’s side ran circles around them with slick one-touch football in contrast to Milan’s choppy play.

Lazio first went ahead after four minutes when Sergej Milinković-Savić beat goalkeeper Ciprian Tătăruşanu. Milan have now conceded within the opening 10 in three consecutive matches across all competitions.

And while the visitors attempted to pull level, they only registered one shot on target in the first half as Rafael Leão, Olivier Giroud, and Brahim Diaz struggled to create anything worthwhile up top.

It didn’t take long for Lazio to double their lead as Milan’s defence was caught sleeping, and Mattia Zaccagni found himself in the right place at the right time to bundle home 2-0.

Pioli attempted to ramp up Milan’s attack in the second half by bringing off Giroud, Diaz, and Junior Messias for Divock Origi, Charles De Ketelaere and Alexis Saelemaekers, but before the trio could make an influence, Lazio struck again.

Pedro made a driving run into the box and was taken down abruptly, allowing Luis Alberto to add a third from the spot before the goalscorer teed up Felipe Anderson for 4-0 minutes later.

The ever-lethal hosts found the net with four of their five attempts on target, while Milan failed to register a clean sheet for the seventh match in a row.

To make things worse for the reigning champions, Fikayo Tomori and Davide Calabria were also forced off with injuries.

The win is huge for Lazio, as they move to third, level with Inter and Roma (37 points), one Milan.

It’s significant news for leaders Napoli, too, who now sit 12 points clear at the top.
