Lazio Coach Maurizio Sarri: “Inter Should Have Played The Ball Out Not Us” | OneFootball

Lazio head coach Maurizio Sarri believes that his team got a fair result when they defeated Inter at the Stadio Olimpico this evening.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN after the Serie A clash, he gave the view that his team did not do anything wrong during the controversial circumstances which led to their second goal which proved to be the winner.

Inter had managed to hold the Biancocelesti at bay for much of the first hour of the match at the Olimpico, but Sarri’s men found their feet in the game to equalize and then score twice more without reply during the second half.

In the buildup to their second goal Lazio passed the ball through midfield where Inter defender Federico Dimarco was on the ground hurt, and Inter’s players believed that the ball should have been put out of play.

The incident proved controversial and gave the rest of the game a fractious tone, but the Lazio coach believes that his team were within their rights to keep playing despite Dimarco being unable to continue for the time, and that it would have been the responsibility of the Nerazzurri to put the ball out when they saw Dimarco was hurt.

Of his reaction to the match, Sarri said that “We went behind after a penalty, but we created some good situations in the first half as well. I told the guys that we had to stay in the game, then there was the episode of the penalty that allowed us to get back into the game.”

On the second goal he said, “There is little to discuss. When Dimarco goes down, Inter has the ball. Clear situation: if there is a team that had to put it out, it was Inter. The law is precise, these scenes are not seen only in Italy.”

On the incident between Joaquin Correa and Luiz Felipe which saw the Lazio defender given a red card after the match, Sarri stated that “He told me he was going to greet Correa, there was a big misunderstanding. I saw some initmidation instead against Felipe Anderson, I was expecting a red card for that.”

Sarri gave his concluding thoughts, “We suffered in the first half with compactness, the Inter midfielders could manage the ball with ease. In the second half we reduced the distance, then after the goals we dropped back.”
