Serie A rivals Lazio and Roma are set to battle out a ‘transfer derby’ for Liverpool defender Joel Matip.

According to a report by Corriere della Serra via TMW, Serie A outfits Lazio and Roma are expected to go into a transfer battle to land the signature of Liverpool’s Joel Matip this summer.

The 32-year-old’s contract with the Merseyside giants expires at the end of the season and he is intrigued by the opportunity to play in the Serie A. He is a dual passport holder of Cameroon and Germany, therefore if he arrives in Italy, he will not take an additional non-EU spot.

Roma and Lazio have expressed interest recently in the defender and they can sign him for free due to his contract situation. Negotiations with Joel Matip’s entourage are set to take place in the next few days and much could depend on the European competitions in which the teams will play next season.
