Lawyer of Real Madrid striker Benzema: We're angry and we'll appeal

The lawyer of Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema says they plan to appeal against his sentence handed down in a French court this week.

Found guilty for his role in a blackmail attempt on former France teammate Mathieu Valbuena, Benzema received a one-year suspended jail sentence.

But the player's lawyer Sylvain Cormier says: "This verdict makes us angry, because it makes no sense. First of all, the court argued that Benzema was not aware of what it is.

"In the end, however, they say that it is not possible that he did not know anything. There is no evidence to say it and it is a harsh sentence, unjust and without evidence.

"We are shocked by this sentence and we will appeal, Benzema will be declared innocent."
