Inter came out victorious in Rotterdam with a strong and mature performance. The Nerazzurri won 2-0 in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16. Today's goalscorers were Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martínez, and the latter wrote himself into the Inter history books.
At De Kuip, the Inter captain wrote himself into the club's history. With his goal that secured the win, Lautaro Martinez became the Nerazzurri's all-time top goalscorer in the Champions Cup/Champions League with 18 goals, overtaking the legend, Sandro Mazzola. It's an incredible achievement for Inter's number 10 who has scored six goals in this year's Champions League, his best record for a single campaign in the competition. He is a true goalscorer and a formidable leader.
If you think Inter are strong up front, they are also so consistent at the back. With the clean sheet in Rotterdam, the Nerazzurri have equalled their record in a single Champions League campaign (eight games without conceding, just like in 2022/23). It is a statistic which confirms Inter's defensive solidity, having won four of their last six games in the competition, keeping a clean sheet on many occasions. Furthermore, the Nerazzurri continued their great record against Dutch teams in the Champions League. Following yesterday's win, we extended our top streak against teams from the Netherlands: eleven games played, zero losses, eight wins and three draws.
Nicolò Barella just keeps on assisting. With the one he assisted last night, he has now got seven this season, confirming his status as Inter's best for assists in all competitions. He also has the best record of any Serie A midfielder this season. These are the numbers of a top player, especially considering that, since his debut as a Nerazzurro in 2019/20, only Rafael Leão (49) has more Serie A assists than him (48).
