The Slovakia international centre-back will leave Inter at the end of the season for the Ligue 1 club.

Samir Handanovic is Simone Inzaghi’s side captain but has hardly played this term after losing his spot to Andre Onana.

Skriniar wore the armband in the goalkeeper’s absence, but Martinez has donned it in recent games.Marcelo Brozovic has also captained Nerazzurri on several occasions.

However, Inter CEO Guiseppe Marotta wants the Argentine to become the permanent captain next term.

The 25-year-old has continued to impress in front of goal this term.

Martinez has particularly been vocal in the dressing room and has emerged as one of Inter’s leaders. The World Cup winner has bagged 15 goals and five assists this term.

He has played over 210 games since he joined the San Siro club from Racing Club in 2018, scoring 89 times.

Martinez played a key role as Inter won their first league title since 2010 in 2021. It ended Juventus’ run of nine consecutive titles.

The Scudetto will most likely go to Serie A leaders Napoli this term, but Inter will try to give them a run for their money.

Nerazzurri are second in the table after 22 games, 15 points behind the Naples club. Plenty can happen in 16 games, and Martinez will be keen to fire his side to another league triumph.

Winning the title could prove impossible for Inter, but they are still challenging for the Coppa Italia and Champions League.

A new captain will be lifting a trophy if they win one this term, and it would be Martinez.
