Inter’s starting strike pair had a night of contrasting fortunes in yesterday’s 1-0 win over Liverpool in the Champions League.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who suggest that Lautaro Martinez will have felt that the night at Anfield was a resurrection for his form, whilst Alexis Sanchez may have heard the death knell for his time at Inter.

Martinez had been in some of his most miserable form in front of goal in recent weeks, but a well-taken hat-trick against Salernitana constituted an announcement that he’s back, and he followed it up in style against Liverpool.

The 24-year-old found the back of the net from range to give his team real hope in the tie, but this was quickly extinguished by the actions of his strike partner.

Sanchez got himself a reckless second yellow barely a minute after Martinez’s goal, and from then on it was always going to be difficult for the Nerazzurri.

Whereas Martinez had a night which showed what he can do for the team going forward, Sanchez’s evening looked like a dead end.

The Chilean could leave the club at the end of the season, and based on what he showed yesterday evening, it could well be that the parting of ways is the best thing for all involved.
