Inter striker Lautaro Martinez has shared his belief that there are a number of reasons as to why so many Argentine players are successful.
“In Argentina, you’re born with passion, with dedication, with heart, and that’s something we always try to take to whichever football league we end up in” he explained in an interview with European football’s governing body UEFA.com.
“You can also see this in Argentina if you follow the league and watch the matches. The same is true of the national team. We always try to show that.
“Talent comes first. That’s something you’re born with. You also need to nurture that, of course and grit comes second. prevailing physically and mentally, and trying to fight against all the obstacles that might get in your way.”
Lautaro, who is now in his third season with Inter, then went on to discuss national team teammate Lionel Messi, who is a player who drew links to Inter during the recent Summer transfer window.
“I know Leo more from the times we’ve been team-mates for the Argentine national team rather than from having come up against him.
“I have said it in the past, and I will say it again today and in the future, he is the best player in the world. The fact that he is Argentine is a source of pride for us, we always try to learn from him.
“For me he is on another level. He understands the game in a different way and is always one step ahead of everyone else.”
The highly rated 23-year-old proceeded to discuss Inter’s Champions League success in the 2009/10 season, which came with thanks to a star performance from Lautaro’s compatriot Diego Milito, who scored a brace.
“I remember seeing the game at home in Argentina with my family. It was very significant because there were so many Argentines in that team and because it was a very important victory for the club.
“Diego in our country is a very important person and footballer. I was also able to play with him and I had a lot of fun. Inter has a lot of fans in Argentina because so many Argentine players have passed through this club.”
In conclusion he spoke on Inter and Argentine football legend Javier Zanetti, who is currently Inter’s vice-president.
“Javier is a very important Inter man, and for us players as well because he passes down to us everything he’s experienced at this club. He did so to me when I first came to Italy.
“Whenever I’ve needed something, he’s always tried to help me. He always lends an ear and asks how I’m doing or gives me a hand with anything I might need. He’s always there to make sure I’m alright inside the club and outside too.
“Above all, he helped me with the language when I arrived, with what the club meant and how we train. He was very important in those matters, so I’ll always be grateful to him. He really helped me out when I got here.”
Since joining Inter in the Summer of 2018 in a circa €20 million deal, Lautaro has went on to make 88 appearances across all competitions to date, in which he has scored 33 goals and provided nine assists for his teammates.
This season he has contributed three goals and a single assist in four appearances across all competitions.
