Lautaro Martinez reveals what he was thinking when scoring that remarkable Inter goal off the outside of the boot beating Bayern Munich. ‘The performance was complete in every respect.’

It was an extraordinary evening at the Allianz Arena in Munich, as the Nerazzurri took the lead through a well-worked team move, finalised by Lautaro Martinez’s flick off the outside of the boot.

“I won a challenge in midfield, then saw the space, Carlo ran into it and Marcus thankfully laid it off for me,” Lautaro Martinez told Sky Sport Italia.

“I wanted originally to shoot with my left foot, but I had so many players in front of me, so I opted to change it and go with the other boot. Fortunately, it went in and gave us the lead.”

Bayern Munich poured forward after the restart and deservedly equalised with Thomas Muller’s tap-in, but Davide Frattesi was in the right place to meet the Carlos Augusto cross late on and snatch the victory.

It was a totally different side to the one that fumbled a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Parma in Serie A at the weekend.

“We talked so much after the draw with Parma. We want to keep improving and if we want to win, we’ve got to leave that behind us to take the result here. This performance was complete in every respect, we showed character, quality, did well in possession and off it against a strong opponent. In a huge stadium against a great team, the lads proved what they can do and that they deserve to wear this jersey.”

Lautaro Martinez scored his seventh Champions League goal of the season, more than any Inter player in this tournament since Samuel Eto’o got eight in 2010-11.

The second leg will be at San Siro on April 16, but this was the first home defeat for Bayern Munich in the Champions League for four years.

“Our performance and attitude must be the same in the second leg. We took the ball off them in the first half and saw how much they suffered, so we need quality as well as determination,” concluded Lautaro Martinez.
