Striker, symbol, captain: Lautaro Martínez produced a magnificent performance against Bayern Munich at San Siro. El Toro defended every ball that came his way, displayed moments of great class and fought against every opponent who tried to stop him. It was an enormous, extraordinary and complete display, capped off by his 150th goal for Inter and another memorable celebration with the fans. For his performance, the Nerazzurri captain was named the match MVP by UEFA, and this is what he had to say after the match:
From his first goal on 29 September 2018 - against Cagliari - to his vital finish against Bayern Munich at San Siro that paved the way to the Champions League semi-finals, Lautaro Martínez’s journey has been an emotional one, built on passion, determination and constant milestones.
The Nerazzurri captain's goal against Bayern was his 150th for Inter in all competitions, a tally he's managed to reach in 325 appearances. An extraordinary personal achievement that cements his place among the greats in the Club’s history.
Lautaro is now the sixth player in Inter’s history to score at least 150 goals, and he sits sixth in the Club’s all-time goalscoring charts. Over the course of this season, he has surpassed two legends - István Nyers and Benito Lorenzi - and he now has his sights set on the next name on the list: Luigi Cevenini III, who is fifth with 158 goals.
In the Champions League, the Argentinian has rewritten the record books: with 20 goals, he is Inter’s all-time top scorer in Europe’s premier competition, surpassing a club icon in the form of Sandro Mazzola, who scored 17 goals in the European Cup.
The Inter captain continues to write his story, and an extraordinary one at that.
