Wigan Athletic are edging towards what could a very important January transfer window in their battle against relegation in the Championship.

The Latics started the season in very promising fashion under Leam Richardson before a drop-off in their attacking potency saw them slip towards the bottom three.

They are two points from safety having won just once in their last ten as a result and Kolo Toure is gradually altering the style with which Wigan are approaching second tier matches.

The Latics were very slow to act in the last January transfer window and a repeat of that sluggishness could cost them dearly come the end of the season.

Here, we have taken a look at the latest transfer news at the club…

Jamie McGrath

Jamie McGrath is currently enjoying a season-long loan at Dundee United and there are murmurs that the Latics will exercise their recall option in January to bolster midfield areas.

The 26-year-old may be enthused by the opportunity to return under a new manager having struggled for regular minutes under Richardson last season, after signing from St Mirren in January of this year.

Dundee United manager Liam Fox has been keen to point out that there have not yet been any concrete suggestions that the loan will end in January.

Talk of recalling players to rescue the club from relegation will not give supporters a lot of confidence heading into January, especially when the likes of Hull City and Cardiff City above them will be looking to strengthen their squad.

Kolo Toure’s stance

Toure was very hesitant to give anything away ahead of the window when he spoke to Wigan Today.

The Ivorian explained that he is still assessing his squad and the task at hand, rather than prioritising targets to address certain areas of the group.

Whether, he is saying with the knowledge that significant funds will not be available in January remains to be seen, but it would be surprising to see the Latics go silent next month, especially having convinced Toure to leave a comfortable coaching role at Leicester City for their battle against the drop.

Changing manager with the window approaching may have complicated things a touch for the Latics but there is a strong core of senior players who will be confident that they can pull themselves out of their current predicament regardless of how January goes.

Toure should reveal more when the window gets underway, but until then focus will be on putting the club in a healthy enough position to attract players to join the fight.
