The Northern Irishman has attracted a lot of attention following his team’s impressive debut campaign in the Championship.

The Tractor Boys are fighting for a place in the Premier League, as they seek back-to-back promotions.

The last manager to achieve back-to-back promotions from League One to the top flight was Eddie Howe with Bournemouth in 2015.

So it comes as no surprise that there are multiple top flight clubs being linked with a move for the Ipswich manager.

It has been claimed that the 37-year-old could be a dark horse to take the reins at Anfield, as they search for a replacement to Jurgen Klopp.

Xabi Alonso was the obvious front-runner to replace the German, who announced his decision to leave at the end of the campaign in January.

The Spaniard is enjoying a successful season at Bayer Leverkusen, and has a history with the Reds from his time as a player.

However, the former midfielder confirmed he will be staying with the Bundesliga outfit, raising questions over who will step up as the next in line to replace the outgoing Liverpool boss.

Despite potential links to McKenna, Sporting Clube de Lisbon’s manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly the current favourite.

According to Give Me Sport, a verbal agreement has been reached between the Portuguese coach and the Premier League side, thus indicating he is next in line behind Alonso.

This will be music to Ipswich supporters’ ears, as losing McKenna would be a huge blow to the club, regardless of their league status for next season.

He has done an impressive job at Portman Road, taking the club from mid-table in League One to challenging for Premier League promotion.

Since taking over in December 2021, the coach has overseen 73 wins from 126 games, including a second place finish in the third tier last season in which they earned 98 points.

McKenna’s future at Ipswich is not certain just yet

Despite this positive development for Ipswich, there are still links to the likes of Manchester United, where McKenna has a strong connection.

He earned a positive reputation with the Premier League side during his time there as a coach, and is now seen as a future manager of the Red Devils.

With Erik ten Hag’s own future up in the air going into the summer, there is still the possibility that the Manchester club pursues their former coach.

Darren Bent has also tipped McKenna as a potential replacement to David Moyes, should the Scot leave the London side in the summer.

"That’s the only worry," said Bent, via Ben Foster's YouTube channel.

"He’s been phenomenal, and if Ipswich don’t go up… There’s so many people that would take him I think.

"West Ham potentially with David Moyes. There’s so many options."

Crystal Palace were also linked with a move for the Ipswich boss prior to appointing Oliver Glasner, and will likely retain an interest in him as long as he remains at Portman Road.

Even German side Stuttgart are reportedly interested in appointing him if their manager Sebastian Hoeneß depart any time soon.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Amorim lowers the chances of McKenna departing this summer, but Ipswich fans will still have their guard up regarding their manager’s future with the club.

Promotion would go a long way to securing his future at the club, as it’s difficult to imagine him walking away from the challenge of establishing the club in the top flight.

But if Man United, West Ham, Palace or even Stuttgart do come calling, then it will be even more difficult to turn down that kind of opportunity.
