The trio of Plymouth ArgyleIpswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday in particular will be looking to steal a march on their rivals as they chase the top two automatic promotion places.

But the likes of Derby CountyBolton WanderersBarnsley and others will all be chasing any advantage they can get in order to secure a top-six finish, whilst Cheltenham, Accrington Stanley and MK Dons will want to avoid being dragged back into the bottom four.

Here we take a look at all the latest headlines surrounding the third tier of English football in the January window.

Exeter City looking to add Bolton Wanderers defender

Bolton Wanderers defender Will Aimson is in advanced talks over a move to fellow League One side Exeter City, according to Football Insider.

Aimson arrived at the University of Bolton Stadium back in the summer of 2021 on a free transfer, after his contract at Plymouth Argyle had expired.

The defender has found himself down the pecking order at Bolton this season, with him only appearing three times in the club’s opening 20 league games. Aimson has recently had a run in the side, owing to shortage of fit defenders.

Now, according to Football Insider, Aimson is in advanced discussions in regards to joining Exeter City.

The 29-year-old is out of contract in the summer and it seems that Bolton are happy to let the defender leave the club before the 11pm deadline on Tuesday.

Sheffield Wednesday’s attempts to sign their former loan defender Michael Hector have hit an impasse.

Hector has been on trial with Wednesday with a view to signing a permanent deal with the Yorkshire club.

However, The Star have revealed that talks have been held between the player and the club, with no sign of an agreement on the horizon. The report suggests a deal is not necessarily off the table and could be revisited in the coming days with the defenders trial being paused for the time being.

Wednesday will be desperate for additional players having seen Mark McGuinness recalled by Cardiff and Reece James sustain an injury.

Barnsley move for Burton defender

Barnsley have made an offer to Burton Albion for the signing of centre-back Tom Hamer, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The Tykes will be looking to bolster the defence amid their push for a return to the Championship this season, with Hamer at the top of their shopping list it seems.

According to this latest update from Nixon, Barnsley have now made an opening bid to sign Hamer, which is thought to be worth around £150,000.

Hamer joined Burton from Oldham Athletic back in the 2021 January transfer window for an undisclosed fee. Since then, the 23-year-old has gone on to make 105 appearances in all competitions for the Brewers, scoring six goals in that time.
