In what remains an incredibly tight league, the business done this month could provide defining for clubs’ prospects this campaign.

As would be expected, there is no shortage of rumours and speculation as the clock ticks down to the closure of the window.

Here is some of the latest transfer news from the second tier.

Boro eyeing Brighton defender

Middlesbrough are lining up a move for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke, according to Football Insider.

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers, making 32 appearances during his time at Ewood Park.

However, he has struggled for game time at the Amex Stadium this campaign, making just four appearances in all competitions, although he was handed his first Premier League start in the 2-2 draw with Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

Defensive reinforcements are thought to be Boro head coach Michael Carrick’s priority with Darragh Lenihan, Anfernee Dijksteel and Matt Clarke all currently out injured, while Dael Fry is suspended after his red card in Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Wolves plot move for Bristol City man

The Premier League side have reportedly expressed an interest in signing the 29-year-old and could swoop if currently number two Matija Sarkic leaves Molineux this month.

According to the Express and Star, Sarkic could be set to depart with Julen Lopetegui seeking a more experienced back-up to Jose Sa.

Bentley has lost his place to Max O’Leary in recent months after initially starting the season as first choice and he has not featured for the Robins since early October.

Wolves are not the only club keeping tabs on Bentley’s situation, with Stoke City also reportedly making an enquiry.

Robins manager Nigel Pearson did not rule out an exit for Bentley when asked about the club captain’s future last week.

“There has been speculation about Dan’s position. How do we sit with that? We have two very good keepers at the football club,” Pearson told Bristol Live.

“Max is playing well at the moment and we’ll see how things develop. I’m not ruling anything in or out. Dan’s contract is up at the end of the season, we’ll see if anything develops.

“We can never leave ourselves short, we always need to have the right cover. For argument’s sake if something happens with Dan in the last week-and-a-half, we’d need somebody else to come in, we’re never gonna leave ourselves short.

“It’s important to have conversations with players about where they sit. Their agents can talk to the club, they can do whatever they want. I’ll talk to the players.”

Millwall join race for Burton striker

Millwall are reportedly preparing an offer for Burton Albion striker Victor Adeboyejo, according to Football Insider.

Wigan Athletic had been the front runners to land Adeboyejo’s signature and have been in talks with the Brewers this month over a potential deal, but now they could face competition from the Lions and League One promotion chasers Bolton Wanderers, with the pair both readying bids.

Adeboyejo has scored 13 goals and registered two assists in all competitions this season, an impressive return in a struggling side.

But with no shortage of suitors, he could now be set to depart the Pirelli Stadium, with The Den a possible destination.
