There wasn’t much in the way of genuine goalscoring opportunities for both sides before Newcastle’s late heroics.

Ebere Eze forced Karl Darlow into a good save with a right-footed effort from the edge of the box before Jeffrey Schlupp stung the hands of the Newcastle goalkeeper with a powerful low drive just before the half-hour mark.

Joelinton scuffed the visitor’s best chance of the first half straight into the arms of Vicente Guaita after Scott Dann had given the ball away in the penalty area.

Christian Benteke came off the bench to power a header at Darlow before an effort from Patrick van Aanholt’s powerful low drive flashed past the far post past the stretch of Michy Batshauyi as Palace began to crank up the pressure late on.

At that stage it looked as if Newcastle were clinging on to the draw before Callum Wilson got onto a flick-on to slide the ball past Guaita in the dying minutes to put Steve Bruce’s side ahead.

As Palace began to try to and rectify the situation, Joelinton broke away down the other end with his shot deflecting in off Gary Cahill to seal the three points for Newcastle.
