Adam Armstrong opens up after sustaining a challenging Premier League season at Southampton.
A year ago, Adam Armstrong used to be the standout Southampton player, by far. The 27-year-old scored 21 goals and seemed a level above the Championship standards.
Further, the striker even scored the promotion winning goal at Wembley to conclude a successful season. Unfortunately, that moment seems a long while ago for Armstrong.
First of all, Armstrong is a typical target man who attempts to make good runs in the box. For that to happen, the team needs to be well equipped while crossing and passing from wide areas.
This is easier said than done in the Premier League. Except for rare games like Everton, Southampton hasn't been impressive in delivering perfect passes while attacking.
That has been holding Armstrong back. Consequently, the attacker has often been replaced from the starting lineup.
Even, Armstrong believes himself to be far behind in the striker pecking order.
Quoted by the Daily Echo, Armstrong reflected on his struggles: "I've been in and out of the team and I'm trying to chip in with goals but it's hard."
Every Southampton striker has struggled so far but Armstrong seems to be bottom in terms of confidence. Unsurprisingly, the club also thinks this way as they chose him for the embarrassing moment against Brentford.
Furthermore, Paul Onuachu and Kamaldeen Sulemana have become indispensable starters in recent weeks. Cameron Archer is also waiting for his chance in the wings, thus, Armstrong's comeback chances have been put in jeopardy.
Still, giving up isn't an option either for him or for Southampton. Therefore, Armstrong must treat every Premier League game as an opportunity to make a useful impact on the result.
The first of them is up against Newcastle United. Armstrong is yet to score against Newcastle United, but, never say never in the Premier League.
