Las Águilas came into the encounter at the Estadio Azteca with just one point from their opening two games.

The hosts were fortunate not to fall behind early on, and had Guillermo Ochoa to thank for denying Fernando Navarro with a superb point-blank save.

América’s chances of victory were greatly boosted just after the half-hour mark when Toluca’s Claudio Baeza was red-carded for a late and dangerous tackle on Diego Valdés.

The Azulcrema thought they had taken the lead in first-half stoppage time when Álvaro Fidalgo ripped a hot into the top corner from 25 yards. However they were cruelly denied the opener by a VAR review that deemed Henry Martín was in an offside position and interfering with goalkeeper Tiago Volpi’s sightline.

América laid siege to the goal of Los Diablos Rojos after the break, but failed to find the inspiration to break down a stubborn Toluca defence.

Indeed the visitors continued to pose a danger on the break and threatened to score themselves on a couple of notable occasions.

It looked like América would go three matches without a win until Richard Sánchez’s speculative effort from distance in added time fizzed past the helpless Volpi.

A tough break for Toluca as they drop points for the first time this season, but a massive shot in the arm for Fernando Ortiz’a men as they now head to the USA for two high-profile friendlies against Chelsea and Manchester City.
