Charlton Athletic marked their return to the Championship with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Watford at The Valley, thanks to a late goal from substitute Harvey Knibbs deep into stoppage time.

The game was a tight and cagey affair for much of the 90 minutes, with both sides creating chances but struggling to find a clear-cut opening.

The visitors had their moments, with several efforts blocked or saved by Charlton’s defence and goalkeeper, but were unable to break the deadlock.

Charlton, meanwhile, looked dangerous on the counter and pressed hard, but their finishing was often wayward with Rob Apter and others spurning chances in the first half. The match remained goalless until the final minutes, with tension mounting in the stands.

Then, in the sixth minute of added time, a well-worked corner routine saw Knibbs rise to fire a close-range finish, sending the home crowd into raptures.

The goal proved decisive, handing Charlton all three points in what was a thoroughly deserved victory for the Addicks.

Watford pushed for an equaliser in the dying moments but Charlton’s defence held firm to secure a valuable win on their first game back in the second tier.
