According to Miquel Blãzquez, Joan Laporta will be traveling with the team to Madrid to witness the first El Clasico of the year. This will see Laporta and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez unite for the first time after April 2010.

Back then, we all remember how Barça used to dominate the white half of Madrid. On the same lines, the Catalan team won that match 2-0 courtesy goals from Lionel Messi and Pedro, both assisted by Xavi.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have been at focal of the Spanish football for more than 100 years now. However, the first decade of the century witnessed a more heated rivalry than ever as both the Spanish powerhouses had a strong president commanding the clubs.

Laporta was elected as President of Barcelona for the first time back in 2003, and Perez has been president for Madrid since 2000. During Laporta’s first reign the war between the two clubs continued off the pitch as both the club battled for the signing of top players during that time. After Barcelona won the treble in 2009, Perez was re-elected as Madrid’s president after three years out of the club.

This Clasico also comes at a very important juncture that both the clubs find themselves in touching distance of the league title as Atletico Madrid seems to lose their rhythm. Laporta famously said during his election campaign that “Madrid did not win any Champions League when I was in charge of the club.”

The Catalan lawyer also unveiled the special edition of the Barcelona jersey for the Clasico. “What a shirt!,” was the President’s first reaction on seeing the jersey.

It will be interesting to see if Barça can bring back the old times, dominating Los Blancos once again under the presidency of Laporta.
