After one of the strangest incidents you’ll see on a football pitch, official Javier Alberola Rojas has learned his punishment.
Rojas has been banned for two matchweeks after he and Álvaro Morata got into a minor scuffle after the referee touched Morata on a pair of occasions late in Atlético’s 1-0 win at Eibar.
At one point, it appeared that Rojas either grabbed or clipped Morata’s neck.
At the time of the incident, Koke defended his team-mate and questioned how the official would be reprimanded.
“He felt a clip around the back of the neck and he got annoyed. He’s only human. I have never seen a referee do that I don’t know what will happen.”
Diego Simeone had also condemned the referee’s actions.
“He was angry about what happened,” said the Argentine, “It reminds me of the time I did that to an official and got a four-game ban.”
Rojas was already set to have the week off so he is effectively banned for just a single contest.
