We’re (almost) at the halfway point of the LaLiga season as we reach Christmas.
So what better time than to hand out our awards for the campaign so far.
It couldn’t be anyone else, could it?
Jude Bellingham’s huge move to Real Madrid couldn’t be going any better and he’s taken to life in Spain like a stag party from England takes to the Benidorm strip.
Just the 13 goals and two assists in his 15 appearances so far for the 20-year-old. Real have a new Galáctico.
Athletic Club have a gem on their hands in Nico Williams.
The 21-year-old had a breakout season last time out and has gone from strength to strength so far in 2023/24.
No player has produced more assists in his league than him (5) and only one more player has provided more goal-creating actions (14). There have also been three goals added to his repertoire.
Not even the most hardcore Girona fan saw this coming.
The team from a city that holds just over 100,000 people in the shadow of Catalonia are rubbing shoulders with the big boys at the top, and suddenly LaLiga could have its very own ‘Leicester City 2016’ story.
With just one defeat in 18 games, they head into the winter break tied with Real Madrid at the top of the league and have also gone to Barcelona and won 4-2.
This fairytale could have a happy ending.
And to no surprise, it’s the man leading the unlikely title charge who gets the nod here.
Míchel has worked wonders since arriving at Girona in 2021, leading the club to promotion back to LaLiga in his first season in charge, before this season’s heroics where his side are the highest scorers in the league with 42 goals in 18 games.
Girona are going to steal this one as well as their teenage forward Sávio has shone during their unexpected title challenge to duly deserve this award.
The Brazilian may only be on loan from Ligue 2 side Troyes but he is going to be remembered by his temporary home for a long time.
Sávio has scored four goals and produced five assists to play his part in the story of the season so far.
It’s been all change at Sevilla.
The defending Europa League champions came into the season with high expectations but José Luis Mendilibar lost his job just nine games into the campaign.
Things didn’t fare much better for his replacement, Diego Alonso, either as Sevilla dropped to 17th before he was dismissed after failing to pick up a win in his eight matches in charge.
It is now down to a face synonymous with LaLiga to steady the ship, as Quique Sánchez Flores is tasked with turning the tide at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.
The return of José Bordalás has lit up Getafe’s campaign.
One of the smaller clubs in Madrid are already punching above weight to be in the top flight, but they are heading into the winter break in touching distance of the European places having taken points off Barcelona, Villarreal, Athletic Club and Atlético Madrid so far this season.
The 3-0 win at Sevilla on December 16 was one of the results of the season, all coming off the back of a campaign where they finished just above the drop zone.
Not just specific to this season but still just as heart-warming.
Real Betis supporters kept up their annual tradition of throwing children’s toys down from the stands onto the pitch to be donated to disadvantaged children during their game against Real Madrid on December 9.
We’re going to take you right back to August because this strike from Memphis Depay against Granada could not be more top bins.
Barcelona 2-4 Girona really had it all as LaLiga’s unlikeliest title challengers laid down a marker.
