Laia Aleixandri faced Barcelona — a club where she spent five formative years growing as a footballer — in a decisive UEFA Women’s Champions League Group D match. This time, she wore the captain’s armband for Manchester City, leading her side with determination.

The match allowed fans and former Barcelona teammates to appreciate Aleixandri’s progression as her contract in England approaches its end.

Great match against an old friend

Barcelona’s first chance came when Aitana Bonmatí recovered possession, sparking an attack that forced Khiara Keating into an impressive save. Keating tipped Salma Paralluelo’s shot over for a corner. Defending a two-time Ballon d’Or winner like Bonmatí is no easy task. However, Aleixandri knew her strengths well from their youth football days.

“She was spectacular — an amazing player. I actually think she’s been the best player for City today, along with the goalkeeper,” Bonmatí said of her former teammate.

Aleixandri’s history with Barcelona runs deep. From 2013 to 2017, she played alongside familiar names like Gemma Font and Ona Batlle. She progressed through the youth academy before moving to Atlético de Madrid in search of more opportunities.

Aleixandri leadership and versatility

In this match, Aleixandri led Man City’s defence alongside Alanna Kennedy, Kerstin Casparij and Leila Ouahabi. She directed her backline with authority, shouting instructions, gesturing to her teammates and even engaging the referee when Serbian official Jelena Cvetković cautioned City for time-wasting. Her leadership on the field was evident.

Aleixandri’s versatility shone through as she stepped into midfield to deliver a precise pass to Jill Roord, whose shot rattled the crossbar. Despite momentarily leaving her defensive position, Aleixandri immediately returned to solidify the backline — a testament to her unwavering commitment.

Since joining Manchester City, Aleixandri has grown significantly under Gareth Taylor’s management. She has adapted to the physical demands of the English game, becoming stronger and more resilient. Her ability to challenge players like Ewa Pajor, one of Europe’s strongest forwards, is a testament to her progress.

Bonmatí eventually sealed Barcelona’s victory after winning a race and a fight against Leila Ouahabi. Bonmati scored that second goal after Pajor outpaced and outmuscled Aleixandri to deliver a perfect assist. Yet, her contributions throughout the match underscored her growth and importance to Manchester City.

Blossoming in Manchester

Aleixandri’s development as a player reflects her adaptability and determination. After leaving Barcelona due to limited opportunities in a crowded defensive roster, her time at Atlético Madrid prepared her for the next step.

At Manchester City, she has become a key player, embracing a style of play that blends Spanish technicality with the physical demands of English football.

“Her ball-playing skills are incredible; she knows exactly when to step out and when not to, when to drive forward and when to hold her position. Defensively, she’s very aggressive and reads the game so well. For me, she’s a very complete center-back,” Bonmatí praised.

Aleixandri’s evolution from a young talent to a leader at one of Europe’s top clubs is a story of resilience, adaptability and exceptional skill. Her future is still uncertain, but the truth is that her contract expires in Summer 2025. Manchester City wants to keep her, but Barcelona also wants her to return home. Many other teams are interested in her services, too.
