LAFC are reportedly in talks to sign Atletico Madrid and France international Antoine Griezmann, according to GiveMeSports' Tom Bogert and Ben Jacobs.

According to the report, sources view the situation "as a matter of when, not if." The potential attacking three of Denis Bouanga and recently signed Olivier Giroud would arguably be the best in all of MLS. Giroud even teased Griezmann's interest in a move to Major League Soccer saying the Atletico Madrid player was "a bit jealous."

LAFC would likely have to make some alterations to its three Designated Player slots currently occupied by Giroud, Bouanga and Eduard Atuesta. The latter would likely have his contract bought down to make room for Griezmann, if a transfer comes to fruition.

LAFC plotting for another major French signing

LAFC is working against the clock here as the MLS summer transfer window closes on Aug. 14. According to the report, talks between LAFC and Atletico Madrid have included a fee that would fall below Griezmann's $10.9 million release clause.

Atletico Madrid value Griezmann still in the squad, but the team has already signed Norwegian striker Alexander Sørloth and are in an advanced stage to bring Manchester City's Julian Alvarez over to Spain. If the latter happens, Griezmann's move to MLS could materialize quickly.

At 33-years-old, Griezmann is coming off a strong season for Atleti scoring 24 goals and providing eight assists in all competitions. His rise to stardom at Real Sociedad came alongside a former LAFC great: Carlos Vela. This summer ended in disappointment for both Giroud and Griezmann as France were knocked out in the Euro 2024 semi-final by eventual champions Spain.

LAFC welcomed Griezmann's international teammate on Aug. 1 with a press conference. The former AC Milan, Chelsea and Arsenal striker has yet to debut for the Black and Gold, though he is included in the team's Leagues Cup roster.
