Despite the match being top of the Western Conference against the bottom of the East, it was not one-way traffic at Banc of California Stadium.

Wayne Rooney’s side showed they were up for the challenge calling goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau into action twice in the first half with Steve Birnbaum having the best chance to break the deadlock.

Meanwhile LAFC, without Gareth Bale and Giorgio Chiellini due to precautionary measures, dominated possession over time but registered zero shots on target during the first 45 minutes.

Brian Rodríguez and Cristian Arango were active though lacked a finishing touch while a Kellyn Acosta volley just before the break was blocked.

Coming out into the second half the match continued to be an entertaining affair as both clubs threatened in front of goal.

But the liveliness of D.C. United was deemed a bit too much and multiple yellow cards led to Birnbaum being sent off and his team a man down.

And then with the man advantage, LAFC were finally able to put the ball in the back of the net after Kwadwo Opoku finished off a counter-attack. The visitors, however, did hit the post minutes later.

With the deadlock broken the hosts pushed for another goal to calm any nerves but goalkeeper David Ochoa made two late saves to keep the scoreline down.

But in the end, one goal was enough for the hosts to pick up three points and they extend their winning streak to a club record seven games while D.C. United are winless in four.
