Denis Bouanga secured the Supporters’ Shield for Los Angeles FC with a stoppage-time goal to defeat Portland on Sunday.

LAFC looked set to secure a crucial victory after Carlos Vela put them ahead shortly after the interval.

The Mexico international curled home a beautiful effort from the edge of the area to leave Steve Cherundolo’s side with one hand on the silverware.

But the Timbers drew level in the closing stages when Dairon Asprilla powered home a cross from Claudio Bravo.

And Bravo played another major role before the final whistle as his challenge on Mahala Opoku was the subject of a lengthy VAR check by referee Ismail Elfath.

LAFC shrugged off that no call to claim the shield for the second time as Bouanga’s mazy run deep into additional time ended with his deflected shot bringing glory to the Californian outfit.

His first-ever MLS goal could not have come at a more opportune time for the Gabon international.

The defeat leaves Portland in sixth place in the Western Conference and with work to do on Decision Day next week to rubber stamp their spot in the play-offs.
