La Liga could soon change its traditional calendar format and instead adopt an asymmetrical fixture list, as used by the English Premier League.
Currently, fixtures in the first half of the season in Spain’s top flight are repeated in the exact same order in the second. For example, Barcelona’s trip to Real Betis on match-day 20 will be a reverse of the meeting between the two sides at Camp Nou on the opening day.
The fixture list in the Premier League, on the other hand, is more random and asymmetrical and according to Catalan publication Sport, La Liga chief Javier Tebas is the driving force behind a revolutionary move aimed to help the Primera División catch up with its English counterpart in the television revenue stakes.
Tebas hopes a less predictable and more exciting schedule will make La Liga more competitive, and merchandise and ticket sales will also be boosted as a result.
Should the federation go ahead with the decision, the new format could be implemented as soon as next season.
