Earlier this week, Girona said goodbye to their on-loan players for the season, including FC Barcelona veteran Oriol Romeu.

The 33-year-old midfielder returned to Estadi Montilivi last summer, a year after he had made the move to Barça.

Reports, however, suggested that Girona were considering re-signing Romeu again next summer, although not on loan but a permanent move, especially if Barcelona agree to terminate his contract which has a year left on it.

However, according to the latest information from Mundo Deportivo, Girona have currently cooled their interest in bringing Romeu back from Barcelona this summer.

While the Catalans do not completely rule out a return, there are no plans in place for the player at this time. His situation will be reassessed in a meeting with his agent as the summer transfer window progresses.

Girona still value the player highly but are unwilling to invest in a player who has only one year left on his contract.

As mentioned above, one possible scenario under consideration is the mutual termination of Romeu’s contract, which would facilitate his departure from Barcelona for free – at which point Girona could consider signing him.

Manager Michel remains one of Romeu’s strongest supporters, along with sporting director Quique Carcel. However, Girona are in no hurry and will see how things pan out before making a decision.
