Dani Olmo’s registration was one of the biggest talking points ahead of Barcelona’s first game of 2025, with La Liga refusing to provide the player with his grant to play after Barcelona missed the deadline.

The situation did not print a pretty picture of Joan Laporta’s board, but the club president eventually managed to ensure that Olmo was registered through the application of a precautionary measure granted by the CSD.

Laporta opened up on the player’s registration in a recent media interaction and cleared the air over what actually transpired. Yet, his registration is unclear as La Liga are fighting to nullify it.

Tebas speaks on the issue

Speaking to the media earlier this week, La Liga president Javier Tebas commented on the Dani Olmo registration saga and how he was not a fan of the CSD intervening and permitting Barcelona to register the player.

“Government intervention does not give a good image. But we have acted as the laws of both fair play and the federation rule,” he said, defending La Liga’s position.

Elaborating on the CSD’s decision to award both players their registrations, Tebas stated that the governing body did not know the rules on the subject.

“The CSD resolution shows that it does not understand how licenses are given. There is an automated process.”

Tebas then gave an insight into La Liga’s side of the story and how it was Barcelona’s fault for not getting the deal over the line, saying:

“With the Olmo case, on December 31, we informed Barça that they have no fair play. They tried to upload Olmo’s license but we told them they can’t apply as he doesn’t have authorization to have a license.”

“On January 3, they had fair play, but then we said you can’t because the player has already been deregistered on the 31st and can’t have a new license,” he added.

Continuing, he further noted: “What does the monitoring commission do? Study how the situation is, because Barça had written a letter, but had already had the license denied. There is no more.”

Finally, Tebas confirmed that he had filed for a new precautionary measure to undo Olmo’s registration, saying,

“We have an appeal placed in the CSD. We have asked for a precautionary measure to de-register Olmo. A precautionary measure that annuls the previous precautionary measure.”
