Barcelona cede pursuit of Chelsea outcast Marcos Alonso

According to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano (h/t Football.london), La Liga giants Barcelona have decided to end their pursuit of out-of-favour Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso.

The 30-year-old Alonso has been with Chelsea since 2016, having arrived on the summer deadline day from Fiorentina. Till date, he has 152 appearances for the Blues, bagging 22 goals and 17 assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)

However, since the arrival of Ben Chilwell in the summer, Alonso has dropped down the pecking order of things. The Spaniard has been completely exiled from the first-team picture after a falling out with manager Frank Lampard.

As a result, he hasn’t played a single game since November last year. Barcelona had been interested in signing him with their second-choice left-back, Junior Firpo, believed to be headed to AC Milan this month.

However, Romano reports that Milan have decided to end their pursuit of Firpo, leaving Barcelona’s plans to sign Alonso from Chelsea in the air. With Firpo set to stay put at Camp Nou this month, it is now very unlikely that the Catalans will make a move for Alonso.

The 30-year-old has previously been linked with a move to Barcelona’s La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid as well. However, The Athletic  (h/t Football.london) recently revealed that Chelsea were yet to receive any serious approaches for Alonso in the ongoing transfer window.

Alonso, during his time at Chelsea, has won the Premier League title, the FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League. But, given his situation, it seems highly unlikely that he will remain with the club for much longer.

However, Barcelona have now ended. their interest in the Spanish international. So, he will have to look elsewhere to find a way out of the Bridge before this month.
