On Monday, many players across Spain and Europe saw their contracts comes to an end at their respective clubs. This was the case for Sergi Cardona, who opted against signing a new deal at Las Palmas. As such, he now begins his search for new employers, and a move closer to home has bee rumoured.

Cardona is from Catalonia, and he was previously on the books at Nastic and Pobla de Mafumet. He left the latter to join Las Palmas in 2020, and four years later, a return home could be on the cards.

In recent weeks, Cardona has been linked with Girona, who would need a new left-back in the event that Miguel Gutierrez – linked with Real Madrid and Manchester United – were to leave. Jijantes spoke to the 24-year-old on this during a recent interview, and Cardona revealed that his family are desperate for him to join Michel Sanchez’s side.

“My whole family is pressuring me to go to Girona. The season they have had is historic, an absolute barbarity. My whole family is from here and just seeing the performance they have had, how the coach has done and the players have performed. That they are playing in the Champions League is something incredible, and from home, they try to get me to go there.

“Playing in the Champions League and doing it with a team with Girona is what all players want and what I have pursued for a long time.”

It certainly seems like Cardona is positioning himself for a move to Girona. It remains to be seen whether there is negotiations between the two parties over the coming weeks, but he would certainly be a fine addition for the Catalans.
