According to Fernando Polo of Mundo Deportivo, Athletic Club defender Inigo Martinez has made a decision to join Barcelona in the summer transfer window, despite having offers on the table from other top clubs such as Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Napoli.

Martinez is set to become a free agent at the end of the season as his current contract with the Basque outfit stands to run out on June 30.

The 31-year-old has shown no indications of wanting to renew his deal and has seemingly prioritised a move to Barcelona.

Indeed, the report states that the Spanish international wants to join a big club where he can challenge for trophies and has had his sight on Barça since last summer.

The Catalans had made attempts to sign Martinez last year, as a possible alternative to Jules Kounde. But they were ultimately successful in securing the Frenchman’s services, which put a move for the former on hold.

However, both parties maintained their mutual interest in a move and things will go ahead this summer.

And Barcelona director Mateu Alemany reportedly managed to reach an agreement with Martinez over a free transfer, subject to two factors – his physical condition and the club’s Financial Fair Play situation.

Amidst this, Martinez is understood to have received offers from Atletico Madrid, as well as Serie A leaders Napoli and their rivals Inter Milan.

However, the 31-year-old has chosen Barcelona as his next destination and will be signing a three-year contract, provided the club do not face any problems with the Financial Fair Play situation.

The report adds that Martinez is a player that Barça manager Xavi Hernandez likes a lot and wanted to sign as a priority. Looks like the Spanish tactician will get his wish, as long as the Blaugrana resolve their FFP issues.
