The future of Lionel Messi remains a hot topic of conversation in the football media, as the latest information comes from Spanish journalist Gerard Romero.

Romero keeps sounding the drum that FC Barcelona remains a player in pursuing Messi when the 35-year-old’s contract expires in June. Most rumors have the Argentine extending with Paris Saint-Germain, while others consider Inter Miami, a significant player.

“Leo has the possible option of Barcelona because its president has publicly said that he would like it,” Romero said on TUDN. “Leo has the possibility of returning home to Argentina because he also has an option and Leo has the option of MLS.

“I think that if Leo does not renew his contract [with PSG] … He has to assess one of those three options. Obviously, Barcelona is an option, but surely due to the economic situation that Barça is experiencing it would not be the clearest right now.”

One of the reasons Messi would consider heading back to Barcelona is because it is due to his family since it was home for them for so many years. Also, Messi’s former teammate, Xavi, is now in charge and ready to welcome him back to the Camp Nou.

“However, for the moment, I am still considering [a return to Barcelona] because his family, his wife,” Romero continued. “Well, there is a special idyll with Barcelona and the last dance that was left pending due to the way [the departure played out]. I think it could happen because we have also told it. Xavi is ready and prepared in case he has to come back.

It will be interesting to see what Messi ultimately decides to do with the final years of his playing career.

The Argentine could begin his post-European playing career in Saudi Arabia as the league there could go after him like they did Cristiano Ronaldo or head to South Florida. Or perhaps remain in the old continent with Barcelona and PSG as options.
