Kieran Trippier could be using interest from Manchester United to secure fresh terms at Atletico Madrid

According to the Spanish publication Marca (h/t Express), Kieran Trippier could be taking Manchester United for a ride regarding a summer switch to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are in the market for a right-back who can complete along with Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Trippier who is coming off an excellent season with Atletico Madrid appears to be one of the frontrunners for the job.

The 30-year-old who is currently with the England squad at the Euros is an experienced hand familiar with the Premier League. More so, his attacking impetus will give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer something that Wan-Bissaka sorely lacks.

United made an initial bid worth £10m for the player. That has since been rejected by Atletico who are seeking a payment of £34m instead. The Spanish giants are unwilling to take a price lesser than the player’s release clause.

If the report is to be believed, Trippier’s intentions to join United may not be genuine, to begin with. It has been suggested that he is just drumming up interest from Old Trafford to earn a lucrative new deal with Atletico.

Despite winning the league, Atletico is not in the best financial position. While Trippier could try to force the Spaniards’ hand, it is debatable if he will succeed. If that truly is the case, United are better off pursuing other avenues instead.

There have been contrasting news regarding the player in recent weeks. While the Mirror has stated that the player is keen to stay on in Spain, the Express reports otherwise. We will get a better idea of the situation in the weeks to come. It is better for us to wait and watch while the situation develops.

  • Manchester United keeping tabs on Manchester City star Nathan Ake
  • Man United to meet Jadon Sancho valuation as negotiations draw to a conclusion
  • Manchester United star Harry Maguire pleased with England’s win over Croatia

While Trippier will definitely give us an added boost in attack, we are better off using the funds for his signing elsewhere. Not only will he be at best a short term option but also could deprive us of the money that may be needed for other reinforcements. The prospect of paying £34m for a backup player is certainly something we can avoid.
