Wednesday afternoon, the LA Galaxy announced the signing of free agent defender, Martín Cáceres. Earlier in the day, the team acquired a 2022 international roster slot from Chicago Fire FC in exchange for $50,000 in 2022 General Allocation Money (GAM). Cáceres has a contract til the end of the year as well as a club option for the 2023 season. He will not count as a TAM signing.
From Uruaguay, Cáceres can play every position on the backline (LB,CB, RB). “Martín is a highly experienced and versatile defender that brings leadership, strong mentality, and more championship pedigree to our team,” said LA Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney. “We look forward to quickly integrating him into the group for the final phase of the season.”
The 35-year-old will bring plenty of experience from the many teams he’s been with through the years. He started off in the Uruguayan league before getting his dream move to Europe. Villareal was his initial team before they would sell him to Barcelona for an 18.5 million transfer fee. The Catalonians would loan Cáceres out to teams like Juventus and Sevilla before eventually selling him altogether. His longest and most successful time at a club would be his years at Juventus from 2012-2016. He would make over 100 appearances for the club and win a total of 7 trophies. He would bounce around Italy after a half-season with Southampton in the English Premier League.
His latest appearances came with Levante earlier this spring. Before his contract ran out this summer, he would make 10 appearances with the Spanish club.
Martín Cáceres is in the process of traveling to the U.S. to meet up with his new team, the LA Galaxy. Once he obtains his P1-VISA, Cáceres will be able to join the Galaxy.
The Galaxy’s next match is on the East coast against the New England Revolution. The match is this Sunday at 5:00p.m. PT on Spectrum Sportsnet.
