Last week, the Los Angeles Galaxy managed to scrap for a 2-2 draw against their rival, LAFC. In a rare first half goal by the defending champions, their 1-0 lead last merely minutes.
This weekend, another California nemesis takes the field against the LA Galaxy. Back in late February during the season opener, newcomers San Diego FC shocked the MLS world by beating the six-time champions at home in Carson, California.
A year ago, the Galaxy went unbeaten in all 16 regular season games at Dignity Health Sports Park. This season, they have yet to win a single game anywhere.
Prior to Match Day 1, both teams started out 0-0-0. Only one has tasted victory during the 2025 MLS regular season. After 90+ minutes of soccer in Game #1, the two California-based soccer clubs had different records.
San Diego FC is an impressive 7-3-4 on the year; a mark that the Los Angeles Galaxy (0-4-10) are surely jealous of.
Anders Dreyer is San Diego's leading scorer. He made himself stand out with a two-goal performance against the Galaxy in the first game of the season. Dreyer has added four more scores since then.
This time, veteran goalkeeper John McCarthy will be starting for the LA Galaxy. Backup Novak Micovic took the field in the last matchup against San Diego FC.
The 2022 MLS Cup Finals MVP has fared better than Micovic. McCarthy has gone 0-4-7 since taking over after three straight losses to open up the season with the second stringer in goal.
The Los Angeles Galaxy are struggling to stop anyone. With a struggling defense, they have allowed a league-high 33 goals this season. That's just 14 games in, too. The next closest is D.C. United with 25 goals on the year.
San Diego FC enters Saturday sitting at third place in the MLS Western Conference standings. The LA Galaxy are dead last in the conference and MLS. Their goal differential (-21) has been abysmal.
The LA Galaxy look like the same as they did back in February. They are struggling to prevent their opponents from scoring in addition to winning games.
Hopefully the reigning MLS champions can find a way to win against their first-year foes. Saturday's game marks the second of three games in a row facing California opponents. Next up will be the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday.
