LA Galaxy have confirmed that their star striker and captain Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez has sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his right knee.
The former Manchester United man went down in the first half of his side’s 3-2 loss to Real Salt Lake in the quarter-finals of the 2023 US Open, and was carried off the pitch on a stretcher and in a flood of tears.
His, and the Galaxy’s, worst fears have now been realised with the club’s top scorer for the last two seasons now set to miss the remainder of the MLS season if not longer.
The injury compounds what has already been an incredibly disappointing season for the record five-time MLS champions, who currently sit bottom of the Western Conference after 17 rounds of games.
Let’s hope for a speedy and full recovery for Chicharito.
