It was a historic and record-breaking night for Kylian Mbappé (24) as France beat Gibraltar 14-0 in EURO 2024 qualifying. The France captain was the star of the show as he scored a hat-trick and assisted a further two goals to aid Les Bleus on their way to a record victory.

Before kick-off, Mbappé had already achieved one milestone becoming the first-ever player to captain Les Bleus eight times before the age of 25. After becoming the youngest player to captain eight matches for France, he also became the first player to win his first eight matches as France captain.

However, the biggest milestone Mbappé achieved on the night was reaching 300 career goals for club and country. In the aftermath of the game, the PSG attacker found the milestone amusing, stating that the milestone was “hilarious”. At just 24, the former Monaco attacker became the youngest player to achieve the milestone whilst playing for his country and clubs in Europe’s top 5 leagues. The previous holder of this record was Lionel Messi. The Les Bleus captain also became the 13th Frenchman to reach the milestone of 300 career goals.

Following his hat-trick, the Bondy-born forward became France’s all-time top goalscorer in competitive matches. His three goals on the night saw him surpass Thierry Henry (34) to the top of the list with 37 goals in competitive matches for Les Bleus.

The 24-year-old’s hat trick took his tally for France in the calendar year of 2023 to 10 goals. This saw him become the first player ever to score more than ten goals in two calendar years for Les Bleus. He also became the first player to achieve the feat in successive calendar years after scoring 12 goals in 2022.

Mbappé’s three-goal haul took his overall tally for France to 46 goals and has seen him leapfrog Antoine Griezzman to third in the list as France’s all-time top goalscorer. This also saw him become the first player ever to be playing in Ligue 1 to score more than 44 goals for their country. The previous player to hold this record was Pedro Miguel Pauleta, who scored 44 goals for Portugal while playing in Ligue 1.
