According to Fabrice Hawkins, Luis Enrique’s decision to substitute Kylian Mbappé (25) at half-time in their Ligue 1 match against Monaco was not injury-related.
Surprisingly, the France captain was replaced by Randal Kolo-Muani at the break as he faced his former club with PSG for the final time in Ligue 1. With Les Parisens’ Champions League second leg against Real Sociedad on the horizon, many would have been left to believe that Mbappé was replaced as an injury precaution to try and ensure he was available to face the La Liga club.
However, as revealed by the RMC Sport Journalist, Mbappé’s substitution was not injury-related and a choice made by the PSG manager. The remaining two months of the season are widely expected to be the 25-year-old’s last in the French capital with the forward set to join Real Madrid. Following his substitution, Mbappé did not take a place on the bench with his teammates. Instead, the France international ventured into the stands of the Stade Louis II.
With the former Monaco attacker planning his future away from Paris, Luis Enrique may be doing the same thing – planning for Paris without Mbappé. This is not the first time that Mbappé has been substituted somewhat prematurely in a match. In PSG’s last match against Rennes, the forward was substituted in the 65th minute. Perhaps Mbappé’s importance on PSG is set to wane as the former Barcelona boss looks to the future.
