Kylian Mbappe told he will NEVER be an 'all-time great’ months after rejecting Liverpool | OneFootball

There was a time in the not-too-distant past when Kylian Mbappe joining Liverpool was a real possibility.

It was a beautiful dream in the heads of all Reds. Kylian Mbappe, Mo Salah, and any one of Sadio Mané, Roberto Firmino or Luis Diaz tearing up the league together in a never-before-seen display of attacking dominance.

But Mbappe made his choice. The Frenchman is now plying his trade at Real Madrid, joining Vinicius Jr., Jude Bellingham et. al. in trying to recreate the Galacticos era.

But Mbappe’s start to this season hasn’t been all sunshine and roses. The Frenchman has five goals in Madrid’s 11 games this season.

And whilst a goal every other game really isn’t a bad return, it pales in comparison to the 12 Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski has. Barca also sit above Real at the top of La Liga currently.

And Mbappe has been criticised for his work ethic in Spain at the minute, something that has followed him around for a few years now.

Nicol criticises Mbappe

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol weighed in on the ESPN FC show, saying that Mbappe will never be remembered as an “all-time great”.

Commenting on a video of Luis Enrique telling Mbappe he needs to defend harder in the final weeks of last season at PSG, and using an analogy of Michael Jordan to do so, Nicol said:

“I think the fact you’ve got to do that tells you that this guy probably isn’t going to listen to a word you’re saying.”

After comparing it to how Kenny Dalglish is remembered as a legend at Anfield due to his work ethic, Nicol said,

“The one group of people that understand are the players that are on the field with you… I bet you there’s not one of them that think [Mbappe’s] gonna die for them.”

“The way Mbappe’s going, he will be remembered as a great player but he’s never going to be an all-time great.”

After a shock loss to Lille in the Champions League last week, with Madrid looking lacklustre throughout, Los Blancos are already facing a bit of turbulence in this young season. It will be down to their superstars to bring them back to life.
