Deschamps also confirmed via Telefoot on Tuesday that Atlético de Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann will take up the role of vice-captain.

“Kylian Mbappé is in the new France captain. Antoine Griezmann is the vice-captain,” said Deschamps.

“Kylian ticks all the boxes to have this responsibility. On the pitch as well as within the squad, by being a key element.”

Since making his debut in 2017, no French player has had more goal contributions for the national team than Mbappé. The 24-year-old has netted 36 goals and assisted 25 in 66 senior appearances for his country.

France take on the Netherlands in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Friday, when Mbappé is expected to wear the armband for the first time.
