Midfielder Kristjan Asllani could start for Inter in Saturday’s Serie A opener against Lecce if Marcelo Brozovic misses the match through injury.

This according to Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it, via FCInterNews, who report that the 20-year-old could be called into action should Brozovic not be deemed ready to return from his calf injury by the weekend.

Brozovic’s fitness is a doubt for Saturday’s Serie A opener, as the team do not want to take any long-term risks with his fitness and so he could miss out as he did the Nerazzurri’s final friendly of the preseason against Villarreal.

Should Brozovic be ruled out of the match against Lecce through injury, Asllani would be the 29-year-old’s natural replacement, as the Albanian was signed from Empoli precisely as a deputy for the Croat.

It will depend on whether Brozovic is deemed to be ready to start against Lecce in all likelihood, but he will not be rushed back as the team feel that they have an able deputy in the form of Asllani if need be.
