The Mirror report that Mavropanos now “looks certain to stay” with the club beyond the end of the European summer transfer window, after his latest injury setback.

Arsenal revealed in their most recent update that Mavropanos has a groin issue, and he is continuing to receive treatment and further assessments. He’s aiming to rejoin full training in October, over a month after deadline day in most European countries.

Various outlets in Greece reported in late July that AEK Athens and Panathinaikos were targeting a summer loan move for Mavropanos. The suggestion was that they believed Arsenal were open to a move, considering the defender’s limited game-time last season.

Mavropanos himself was hesitant at first, according to the Mirror, turning down an initial advance from AEK. The club’s sporting director was set to fly to the UK to convince the 21-year-old, but this latest injury means AEK are now looking elsewhere.

Considering the departure of Laurent Koscielny and the potential for Shkodran Mustafi to follow the Frenchman out the door, Mavropanos may not have been allowed to leave even if he was fit. Arsenal need backup options after all.
